Where acorns grow.
This year my work/life/art balance was skewed towards the work side. I took more hours on the day job and didn't write as many newsletters as I wanted, and didn't make as many things as a I wanted. But there were some highlights and I feel lucky that I get to share them with you.
Giant Robot had their 4th annual Totoro show and I got to make the interactive piece you see above. It was really cool to see people at the gallery pressing the button and laughing with delight. I also had a great conversation about this piece with Donald Bell from Maker Project Lab , we go in depth about the process of making it, we also talk about automata, teaching and finding free materials, I had a good time with it and you can watch the video here.
Speaking of automata, the kids from the AURÓ school in Barcelona made some walking automata inspired by the work I made last year. They wrote about it and posted some videos on on their blog (it's in Catalan but google translate will get you there) and I feel quite honored, there are very few things as satisfying as inspiring others to make something with your own work.
Finally, I took a strange detour this November (makevember) and spent some time exploring coding and fabrication. I tried making one project a day using a beginner friendly javaScript library called p5js and documented the process and output here. A lot of the sketches are interactive and you can use them for your own projects. I'm not an expert of course but these journeys outside my comfort zone feel like an important way to stay creative.
Thank you so much for following my art making adventures, I hope you are enjoying the holidays and wish you a very happy new year!
