A Portal into Story
For a while I believed I wanted to create things with words. I spent a lot of time writing in my native tongue (Spanish). But as I began living more and more of my life in English I didn't feel I owned this language, as if I didn't have permission to bend it to my will.
Trapped in between languages, I found myself working more with images than with words. And I've been intentionally building a little shelter in the world of images for a few years now, but I yearn for the world of narrative.
This short comic is one of my efforts to follow that feeling and explore narrative with my drawings. I drew it one page a time during several weeks with no preconceived idea of where the story was leading me. And I used a limited palette of colored pencils, putting effort into creating interesting textures to add to the dreamy quality of the story.
One of the reasons I love zines is that they are an affordable way to collect art and connect with other artists. Also, zines are reproductions but they also have a personal feel and you enjoy them with your hands, and with your eyes, and with your mind. If you want to grab a copy of this one, head over to my etsy store. And as always, best wishes to you, and thanks for following my art making adventures!
